Not Just a Strange Visitor

StrangeV, an often visitor to the Dave Schutz's Friendly Discussion Board has recently surfaced some vintage articles related to George Reeves. I'm sure you will find them interesting.

Press-Telegram (page.11) - Long Beach, California - Wednesday, Sept. 23,1953 - Don Brackenbury

Superman (His Own Self) Here, Gets 'Bad Guys'

Superman cleaned up a contraband ring today in the Port of Long Beach.

You see, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen were assigned by their city editor to interview these guys aboard a salvage ship off shore.

Only the editor doesn't know the ship's crew are all pirates.

So Lois and Jimmy charter a boat and go out to the ship, see, and these pirates Shanghai them.

Of course, Superman finds out and he soon cleans up the pirates and gets Lois and Jimmy out of the jam.

And they still don't find out he really is their fellow reporter Clark Kent.

The activity was another episode in the television show, Superman, which is released here every Monday at 8:30 p.m. over KECA-TV, Channel 7. Whitney Ellsworth, producer of the show, said the episode filmed on the Long Beach water front today would not be televised for several months.

About 40 members of Superman Inc. -including George Reeves, who plays the role of the mighty man himself -were on location at Pierpoint Landing and along the docks of Pier A.

Also on hand was lovely little Noel Neill, who portrays Lois Lane, and Jack Larson, who is Jimmy Olsen on the show.

Under the guidances of Tommy Carr, director, movies were shot of Miss Neill and Larson sailing in a small charter boat to approach the "pirate" ship.

(Hope the Navy doesn't feel insulted that one of its craft modeled for the pirate ship
on long shots.)

Reeves said he thoroughly enjoys portraying the role of Superman and is tickled that it has quite an audience among adults.

"It's a sort of fairy tale," he said, "sort of St. George and the Dragon all over again."

His biggest problem, Reeves added, is youngsters who are curious as to how he is able to fly. He said he sort of has to "blind them with footwork."

Although the Long Beach shoreline provided the background for today's scenes it won't be visible in the finished product. The action supposedly is taking place at night and all of the movies were taken through a heavy filter.

INSIDE TV Column - Eve Starr

STARR REPORT: George Reeves, the amiable ex-stuntman and boxer who has been doubling in brass as Superman for the past six years, is still getting over the effects of discovering that he is not quite so invulnerable to earthly weapons as he might like to be. Just about a year ago his light sports car got caught between a couple of rambunctious trucks that "bounced me back and forth like a ping pong ball."

While he wasn't severely injured, he was badly shaken up, spent some time in the hospital and still can't be as active as he would like in his role as the all-seeing, all conquering hero from another planet. "It loosened up a lot of my old fractures," George grins, "and I can't take falls yet. It's rather disappointing to the kids when I go on my personal appearance tours because about all I can do is just stand there and sign autographs and flex my muscles. But I should be back in good shape again when we start production on the next batch of films this summer."

George is excited these days about a new career, that (of) a singer, and has just gone to considerable expense to cut his own audition record, accompanying himself on the guitar. He laughs it off, but he's nonetheless serious about it.

He has also interested himself in a relatively unkown disease, myasthenia gravis, which affects the nerve ends to the extent that the mere act of opening one's eyes becomes a major physical feat. "Whit Ellsworth's daughter has had it since birth," Reeves explains. Ellsworth being the producer of Superman, "and Whit's wife has formed a national foundation to fight this thing. When you see a six-year old kid who can't move a muscle without expending the kind of effort you and I would need to climb a mountain, it does something to you. Most people have never heard of myasthenia gravis but we hope to correct that situation."

A bachelor, George lives alone in a comfortable little house up one of the Beverly Hills canyons, where his neighbors are Gig Young and Fess Parker. He has a minature schnauzer Sam, and a self-built concrete steam room out back to help him keep in shape. He also has a new sports car.

"They insisted that I go get a standard American car," he says, "so I did. But it was so big and fat that I kept sideswiping telephone poles every time I tried to park the thing. So I got rid of it and got me a Jaguar."

You can spot him almost any day, tootling happily down Sunset Blvd. He's the one who looks almost as big as his car. In fact, he is.

(BTW Guys, I now have info that the Tony Bennett gig was actually the Perry Como show and Tony was filling in during the summer of '56. [The sources are a Dec.'57 GR article and 1992 Bennett one.] More on that later and there could be prints. - SV)

Live Salmon Spark - February 12, 1958
Stunt by TV Stars

HOLLYWOOD (UPI) - Four live Columbia River salmon played a part in an unusual stunt last night to spark interest in an awards banquet for Pacific Northwest television stars.

The salmon, all weighing about 25 pounds, were flown here after being freshly caught in the Columbia. They ended up in a tank at the swank sportsmen's lodge in North Hollywood where television personalities tried their luck at casting for their elusive chinook.

Among the fishermen-actors were TV'S Superman George Reeves, Andy Devine, Broderick Crawford, Walter Brennan, Clint Walker and Pat Conway, who received awards for top ratings in the Seattle, Portland and Spokane area. The presentations were made by Gov. Robert D. Holmes of Oregon and Gov. Albert D. Rosellini of Washington.

The fish set a "first" as being the only adult salmon to be flown for a great distance alive. They were placed under sedation during the "airlift" and kept in a specially prepared tank of water cooled to 58 degrees.

The awards - and the cost of transporting the fish - were sponsored by the Crown stations of Oregon and Washington - KING-TV, Seattle; KGW-TV, Portland, and KREM-TV Spokane.
