As everyone should be aware by now Jan Alan Henderson and Michael Bifulco released a second edition of Speeding Bullet: The Life and Bizarre Death of George Reeves. This came about for good reasons. One is the first edition is flat out, completely sold out, unavailable. Recently copies have escalated to over an unbelievable two hundred dollars on eBay. Why has this happened? Perhaps it is caused by the recent upward spike in the general publics interest surrounding the mysterious and tragic death of George Reeves on June 16, 1959. Many have come to learn that Jans book is the definitive version covering this subject. And rightly so, Jan a long time resident of Los Angeles, California has researched the life and death of George for more than 35 years. Both Carl Glass of Glass House Presents and I have encouraged Jan to print a second edition for the many newly interested people who missed out on the first edition and as well as those seeking updated information. It was not Jans intention to ever revisit this subject and countless times he has told me he needs to concentrate on other interest, mostly related to his music creativity. But, once again Jan is answering to the call of the wild. The wild being those who are inquisitive, seek knowledge and want the truth. In other words, the demand is in excess of supply. For now the truth of what happened that awful night is certain to be lost forever unless hard evidence was ever to present itself. For years rumors ran in various circles of what happened to George. Much of the information was clouded in secrecy and hearsay and what people would want you to believe. Jan sorted it all out. What couldn't be confirmed remained in his files. He was the first to bring readers in great detail the three most often discussed theories surrounding the death of George Reeves. So that you the reader could decide for yourself what happened. He did so by starting at the beginning. What clues did Georges life have on his death? What did the newspapers of the time report? For most it made little sense no matter how you looked at the case. Did George commit suicide because of the state of his mind? We will never know for sure. Was he murdered by either Mannixs or by Leonore Lemmon in a jealous rage? We will never know for sure. Speeding Bullet once again brings you as close as can be, just short of the hard evidence required to pinpoint and confirm the absolute truth. The best anyone could do at best is contained within these pages. And if the mystery surrounding the death brought you to learning more about Georges life, then this would be a major plus. Jan has charted all or most of Georges life and career in two books (Speeding Bullet and Behind the Crimson Cape: The Cinema of George Reeves with Steve Randisi) and several magazine treatments. Jan would make it all happen in his own unique way. He has succeeded where no one else has or is able to claim to have done so, including myself. In short, Jan walked the walk and talked the talk. He stepped up to the plate and gave us all he could substantiate. And we are the benefactors of his research and the connections he made to pull it all together. This time around, Jan and Michael together provide more information and many new photos of George, which is always a big favorite among admirers of George. Ive got my copied reserved. Heck, gives me a good reason to read it all again and learn more. And finally, be sure to look for Carls exclusive interview with Jan Alan Henderson at GHP as they discuss Speeding Bullet: The Life and Bizarre Death of George Reeves. Lou (November 2006) |
