1) TELL LUDLOW TO ASSIGN A PHOTOGRAPHER
In TAC, Jr. #11, I wrote that you could have your photos personally
autographed by Phyllis, Jack, and Noel if you put each photograph and note
in a separate envelope and then sent them to me for forwarding. Since then
several readers have asked where they can get photographs to do this. There
are several photo stores that carry pictures of the cast of Superman. Reader
Lou Koza gave me the address for Jerry Ohlinger's Store. He has several
different shots of Noel and Phyllis and one photo of Jack and George
together. As Lou recalls, the photos sell for about $4.00 plus shipping.
Write to or call:
Jerry Ohlinger's Movie Material Store, Inc.
242 W. 14th St.
New York, NY 10011
(212) 989-0869.

When you send the photo to me to be forwarded, please be sure to affix
adequate postage on the envelopes to be forwarded and on the envelopes they
will use to return the photos to you. [Autographed photos are no longer available
through The Adventures Continue. jln 12/26/2000]

2) THERE IS ONE OTHER POSSIBILITY
Paul Smart received his autographed photo from Phyllis last month along with
a note. Phyllis has made arrangements with a friend of hers, Samantha Olson,
to handle photo requests. For a charge of $11, Ms Olson will send you an
autographed photo of Phyllis Coates. The money she collects will be used to
buy supplies for her classroom. Write to:

Samantha Olson
PO Box 1969
Boyes Hot Springs, CA 95416

I spoke with Phyllis last week, and she said she would continue to autograph
pictures forwarded through The Adventures Continue, but she would prefer if
you wrote to Samantha Olson.

[Note: Autographed photos are no longer available Samantha Olson. jln 10/26/2001]

3) BIRTHDAY REMINDERS FOR NOEL. AND PHYLLIS. AND JACK
Noel Neill's birthday is coming up on November 24. Last month I suggested
sending cards to her through The Adventures Continue. So far I've received
several and hope for many more. Simply choose a card, write your note, write
Noel's name on the envelope, and affix a stamp. Put that in an envelope and
send it to me. In November I'll complete the address and drop it in the mail
in time for her birthday. (Some people have sent me cards without postage.
I'll put all of those in one large envelope and send them to her. If you
want yours to arrive individually, be sure to add the stamp.)

I don't know why I didn't mention it before, but Phyllis' birthday is
January 15, and Jack's is February 8. It's definitely not too early to plan
their birthday greetings as well. You can send all three cards to me at the
same time, and I'll see that they are delivered on the correct dates.

4) WHO IS JIMMY OLSEN?
If you don't know the answer to that, you would not have been a Jeopardy
winner on September 3 when Alex Trebek read: "Jack Larson was a guest on a
Lois & Clark episode reprising a role that he had in an earlier TV series.
(Touch of the glasses to Francine and Marty Fleischer of New York for the
information.)

5) SLEIGHT OF HAND TRICK
Have you ever noticed that when Jimmy takes the photo of Clark, the
professor, and Nancy in the lab ("The Whistling Bird) Uncle Oscar's hands
are held behind his back, but when Jimmy and Clark view the photo later,
Oscar's hands are in front? (A touch of the glasses to Don Holmes for that
observation.)

6) THIS IS A TROPICAL ISLAND, NOT PITTSBURGH!
Apparently the director of the new Superman movie with Nicolas Cage prefers
Pittsburgh because it was recently reported in the paper that filming on the
film will begin next year using that city as a model for Metropolis. It was
also reported that Cage's portrayal would emphasize Superman's insecurities.
Shortly after that announcement I received a note from Bill Kane in New
York. I share his sentiments whole-heartedly. Bill wrote:

I love Cage and think he is the best at playing kooks and creeps but oh so
wrong for Superman. I'm enough of an optimist to think that many wonderful
films could and should be made in a new Superman series, but enough of a
realist to think that this will not happen anytime soon. The writers would
need an old-fashioned sense of humanity that seems to be missing from our
present-day culture. The awe and wonder of Superman also requires the
down-to-earth kindness and gentlemanliness that George radiated. These
qualities would be foreign to a generation brought up on MTV. Perhaps they
intend to destroy Superman once and for all. I hope the movie never gets
made with Nicolas Cage. Even Percy Helton couldn't make a Superman out of
him.

This just in.

Here's a bulletin which just came in ... Nick Marone, public enemy #3, has
just been brought in for questioning. No, wait, that's a different story.
here it is. this from Anita M. Busch, a special to Mr. Showbiz/ABCNEWS.com.

"Superman Lives, the long-in-development movie that could pump new life into
an old franchise for Warner Bros., has been postponed one more time - all
the way to the end of the millennium. Production on the Tim Burton-Nicolas
Cage project, which was originally scheduled to begin on October 6, and was
later delayed until February, has just been moved back until late March or
early April. As a result, its release date has been delayed from next summer
until Independence Day weekend... 1999."

(A touch of the glasses to Jesse Groth for the tip-off.)

7) MURDER MYSTERY WEEKEND
Dwight Kemper's "Superman Murder Mystery" was recently presented at the
Sherwood Inn in Greene, New York. Dwight wrote: The Superman Murder Case
was a great success and will be repeated October 11-12. In fact, I do believe
that we collectively "solved" the case and at least "proved conclusively"
that his death was NOT a suicide. With this issue of TAC, Jr. #12 I've
included a photo depicting how George's death may have occurred.

To find out more about Dwight's productions, visit his site at
http://www.pronetisp.net/~mystery/. It should also be noted that The
Adventures Continue
reader Thomas Boud of Bloomingdale, New Jersey became so
interested in Dwight's production that he traveled to Greene and took on the
part of Eddie Mannix in the production. You will read Tom's account of the
show in The Adventures Continue #15.

Murder Mystery Weekend

8) DIRECTED BY TOMMY CARR
You should have received a notice from me a few weeks ago, but I want to
also make this part of a TAC, Jr. Tommy Carr passed away on April 23 in
Ventura, California. Carr directed many of the best episodes of the
Adventures of Superman including "Panic In the Sky," " Five Minutes To
Doom," "The Haunted Lighthouse," and "The Case Of The Talkative Dummy." Carr
was 89.

I phoned Noel, Jack, and Phyllis to tell them of Carr's passing. All three
were saddened by the news, especially Jack. He said Tommy Carr was a
wonderful director.

9) I'M AFRAID THAT'S TRUE OF A GREAT MANY PEOPLE
In "The Man Who Made Dreams Come True" Rutherford P. Jones, aka Mr.
Thompson, aka The Dreamer tells Clark Kent that he knows a girl who
"desperately needs something to make her feel. well, important." Clark
replies, "I'm afraid that's true of a great many people." Recently when
Chuck Harter phoned Queta Vacio, he discovered that she, too, could use a
little cheering up. Her health is not good and she misses Nati. For those of
you who receive The Adventures Continue and have read her interview in TAC,
#13, why not take a moment to send a card along with a short note? Queta's
address is 931 Ford Street, Burbank, CA 91505.

Update: 4/8/00 -- Because of Queta Vacio's poor health she is unable to receive mail.

10) NAME THAT PET
For years Gail and I have been naming our pets after television
personalities. We had a dog named Mary (Mary Tyler Moore), a parakeet named
Louie (like Louie DePalma he sat in his cage and squawked madly), and now
have a cute little terrier named Sam (after George's schnauzer). Francine
Fleischer recently sent me Bill Bell's City Beat column (NY Daily News,
7/28/97) in which he wrote about Bill Hoffman, a licensed private nuisance
wildlife control officer who removes unwanted wildlife from homes, offices,
and warehouses. Sometimes people also call him to pick up unwanted pets.
Hoffman usually declines those offers, but he made an exception for a rare
Chinese turtle named George Reeves. I know the tortoise can sometimes beat
the hare, but is this one, George Reeves, also faster than a speeding
bullet?

11) MONSTER CONNECTIONS
This being October, I thought you might like to check out a few monster
flicks to see if you can spot any Superman connections. I'm sure there are
many more, but here are a couple to look for:

Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman (1943) - Cyril Delevanti (King Leo) appears
in the opening scenes as one of the grave robbers.

The Brute Man (1946) - John Hamilton plays Prof. Cushman, Tris Coffin is the
police lieutenant, and Peter Whitney is Police Lt. Gates.

House of Frankenstein (1944) - Olaf Hytten (you know. Jarvis, that man of
his in "Great Caesar's Ghost") appears as Hoffman.

The Mummy's Curse (1944) - Virginia Christine (Mrs. Frank in "The Lady in
Black") is Princess Ananka.

The Mummy's Ghost (1944) - Myra McKinney (Madame Selena in "Mystery In Wax")
appears as Martha Evans) and Robert Lowery (Gary Allen in "The Deadly Rock")
is Tom Hervey.

The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942) - Olaf Hytten portrays Herr Hussman.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) - Dabbs Greer appears briefly as a gas
station attendant, Everett Glass (Prof. LaSerne in "The Mysterious Cube" and
"Divide and Conquer" as Dr. Ed Pursey, Virginia Christine as Wilma Lentz,
and Tom Fadden (Eben Kent in "Superman on Earth") as Uncle Ira Lentz.

Son of Dracula (1943) - Cyril Delevanti appears briefly as Dr. Peters.

I Married A Monster From Outer Space (1958) - Gloria Talbot (Myra Van
Cleever "The Girl Who Hired Superman") appears as Marge. Also look for John
"There is no #1 crime boss in Metropolis anymore" Eldredge as Capt. Collins.

Killers From Space (1954) features Ben Welden as a pilot, Lester Dorr (the
bus driver in "The Mind Machine") as a gas station attendant, and James Seay
(Sen. Taylor in "The Mind Machine") as Col. Banks.

It! The Terror From Beyond Space (1958) features Dabbs Greer as Eric Royce.

Blood of Dracula (1957) - Sandra Harrison (Nancy in "The Man Who Made Dreams
Come True") appears as Nancy Perkins who has an affliction which is
definitely *not* true of a great many people (thank goodness).

And don't forget to look for Robert Shayne in The Giant Claw, The
Indestructible Man, Invaders from Mars
(1953), and The Neanderthal Man.
