1) SEE YOU AROUND, PAL
We were saddened to hear that Ben Welden died on October 17, 1997 at the age
of 96. Welden appeared in more than 100 movies from the 1930s through the
1950s. His films include The Fighting Seabees, Out of the Fog, and Tear Gas
Squad, in which he appeared with both George Reeves and John Hamilton. On
the Adventures of Superman, Welden appeared in eight episodes, spanning all
six seasons.

(1951) #8 - Curly in "The Mind Machine"

(1953) #35 - Hank in "The Dog Who Knew Superman" and #39 - Nosy in "The
Machine That Could Plot Crimes"

(1954) #63 - Leftover Louie Lyman in "Flight To The North"

(1955) #70 - Carni in "Topsy Turvy"

(1956) #85 - Lefty in "Disappearing Lois"

(1957) #95 - Jody Malone in "Mysterious Cube" and #99 "Gentle Monster" as
a henchman.

On the evening Gail and I learned of Welden's passing we went out to dinner.
And yes... we had lemon meringue pie for desert.

I thought this dialogue from "Flight To The North" would be an appropriate
way to remember him:

Leftover Louie Lyman is already in Kent's office as he enters -
Louie: Hi.
Kent: Hello. Can I help you?
Louie: You don't recognize me, do you, Mr. Kent?
Kent: Well, you seem familiar, but I can't quite place you.
Louie: You placed me once all right. Placed me right in the State Pen.
Kent: Oh sure, now I remember... Leftover Louie Lyman.
Louie: That's right, Mr. Kent. Just graduated yesterday. You know, if it
hadn't been for those articles you wrote, I mighta got off with six months
instead of five years.
Kent: I wrote it the way I saw it, Louie. And you know yourself you deserved
that five years for the bank job.
Louie: OK, OK, I... I ain't complaining. I just wanted you to know that
there ain't no hard feelings.
Kent: I appreciate that, Louie.
Louie: I thought you would. (Grabbing Kent's lapels.) Don't let it happen
again, see!
Kent: That depends on you, Louie. You behave yourself, and I won't bother
you.
Louie: You mind your business, Kent, and I'll mind mine. Get it?
Kent: Sure, I get it.
Louie: Good. (Louie walks toward the door) See you around, pal.

Indeed, Ben... we'll see you around. And thanks... we loved your
performances.

2) GEORGE REEVES' TV GUIDE COVER
Last month I was pleasantly surprised with an e-mail greeting card from
reader Larry Walz. Larry could have chosen many different TV Guide covers to
put on the card, but he wisely chose the photo of George Reeves which
appeared on the September 25, 1953 issue. You can send a similar greeting to
friends by going to
http://www.tvgen.com/tv/covers/cgi-bin/cover.pl?cover=530925.

Update: This particular link no longer works, but it will take you to TV Guide.

3) I APPRECIATE WORKS OF ART BETTER FROM A DISTANCE
Superman may have appreciated works of art better from a distance ("Superman
Week"), but Nelson Jimenez would like to see a likeness of George Reeves
smack dab on the cover of a DC comic or Comic Buyer's Guide. He has written
to both publications several times and is urging other fans to do the same.
If you would also appreciate that kind of art, please send your comments to
Comic Buyer's Guide (ohso@krause.com) and DC Comics (dcodcumail@aol.com). If
you'd like more information from Nelson on this, you can reach him at
NelsonX1@aol.com.

4) THE SHADOW KNOWS
Recently Don Holmes sent this: "The Runaway Robot" has a scene in which
Chopper (Russell Johnson) says, "Now get him back here fast!" as Hero leaves
the safe he broke into. As Chopper says that, you can see a shadow of a
man's head in the window behind him and Rocko (Dan Seymour). The shadow
moves into the scene and then moves quickly away.

Don also observed a mysterious shadow at the very end of "The Case of the
Talkative Dummy." Back in Henderson's office, both he and Kent are wearing
their hats.
Henderson: Well Kent, the trap worked. We tailed the crooks to their
hideout, recovered the armored cars, the missing men, and the money.
Kent: All of it, Inspector?
Henderson: Ah, not all... about two hundred thousand. But that plus the half
million that Superman brought in last night when he delivered Green.... Ah,
Kent, I guess I owe you an apology. You were right after all... but how you
knew that...
Lois: Yes how did you know it was Green on the other end of that phone?
Kent: Well, Lois, like I was telling you last night...
(Phone rings. Henderson, still wearing his hat, goes to his desk.) [We can
see his shadow briefly on the wall behind Clark and Lois. The Shadow is
wearing a hat.)
Henderson: (Not wearing hat.) Yes... Henderson speaking. (Listening.) Oh,
you'll have to speak a little louder.
Lois: [The Shadow is wearing a hat.] All right Clark, if you're so smart,
who's on the other end of the phone now?
Kent: The chief, and if we're not back at the Planet in fifteen seconds
flat, we're both going to get fired. Now come on.
Henderson: [Not wearing a hat.] Oh, a... for you, Kent. Your boss.... Hey!
(Kent and Lois are out the door.)

5) TV PARTY
I love maintaining the web site and publishing The Adventures Continue and
TAC, Jr. because I learn so much from others who share my interests.
Recently Billy Ingram wrote to ask about George Reeves for a web site he
maintains called TV PARTY. I recommend this site for anyone who has an
interest in television, especially the more obscure shows which have come
and gone through the years.

Ingram spent sixteen years working in the entertainment industry in Los
Angeles, including ten years designing movie posters for films like
Moonstruck and The Firm. He worked with stars like Streisand, Speilberg, and
Tom Cruise. He also worked in television on some pilots and in the music
industry. Ingram is currently living in North Carolina to do some writing.

When you have some time to spare, check out his site at www.tvparty.com.
I'm sure you'll like it.

6) KEEP THOSE CARDS COMING
Noel's birthday is getting close (November 24). If you haven't already sent
your card to be forwarded, please do within the next few days. I have many,
but not yet enough to rival the bag of mail Lois received on her desk in
"The Wedding of Superman." It won't take much time or energy on your part,
but I'm sure it will brighten Noel's day on her 77th birthday. And while
your looking for that card for Noel, pick up two more... one for Phyllis'
birthday in January and the other for Jack's in February. Here's your chance
to let them know how much you really do care.

7) 1998 GEORGE REEVES CALENDAR
All of you should have received notice about the new calendar for 1998.
Orders have already started to come in. Randy and I and all who contributed
their vast amount of knowledge have worked hard to make this calendar one
you will treasure all year. We now have more than 160 dates on it, and I
have a few more to add this weekend. Last Saturday Dabbs Greer called me
with information concerning George's performance at the first annual
Pasadena Playhouse West Coast Alumni Breakfast in 1955. That's all I'm going
to tell you for now, but when you receive your calendar you'll learn what
George and his friends did that morning and you'll learn which Superman
character actress organized the event and which one was elected president.

If you lost your order form or didn't receive one, please send e-mail, and
I'll get one to you right away. Remember, all orders must be received by
November 10. Only a limited number will be printed and none will be
available after that date.

8) NOW SON, YOU KNOW THERE ARE NO GHOSTS. THEY DON'T EXIST
Michael Ramey spotted George on The Learning Channel's Hollywood Hauntings
on Thursday night. According to Mike, George was given a fairly prominent
spot. TLC included several stills of George, a few clips taken from Superman
and the Mole-Men
, and a view of George's house along with the usual hokum
about the house being haunted.

If anyone happened to tape that show, I'd be interested in seeing it.

9) HAPPY TRAILS
On November 8, 1954 George Reeves succeeded Roy Rogers as National Chairman
of the "Little Helpers" campaign for the City of Hope (to aid children with
leukemia). Last Friday Dale Evans celebrated her 85th birthday, and on
November 6, Roy will turn 86. I'm sure George would be happy to join with us
in wishing them many Happy Trails.
